The Yadkin River originates on the eastern slopes of the
Blue Ridge mountains near Boone North Carolina, flows
northeasterly for about 100 miles to near Winston Salem,
and then flows to the southeast until it joins the Uwharrie River,
approximately 5 miles below the Badin lake dam, to form
the Pee Dee River. The Pee Dee continues its southeastern flow
through South Carolina where it meets the Atlantic Ocean near
Georgetown, South Carolina. The North Carolina portion of the
basin contains approximately 5,990 miles of freshwater
streams and rivers.

Badin Lake is part of the Yadkin Project, owned and operated
by Alcoa Aluminum and licensed by the Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission (FERC). The Yadkin Project is a hydropower project
consisting of four dams and power houses ( High Rock, Tuckertown,
Narrows also known as Badin. and Falls) located on a 38 mile stretch
of the Yadkin River in central North Carolina.

Badin Lake was the first of Alcoa's facilities to be built in 1918
and by comparison it is a deep water lake with depths at the dam
approaching 180 feet. As such, the Badin dam produces more electricity
than the other three Alcoa dams combined insuring a stable water level
year round, and a very safe recreational facility that is ideal for all
lake activities including boating fishing, skiing, tubing , jet skiing, etc.
Badin Lake has about 125 miles of shoreline and the Uwharrie Point
Peninsula, with 25 coves of varying sizes, has about 14 miles of shoreline.
