The Yadkin River headwaters have their humble beginnings in the mountains at Boone, North Carolina, about 100 miles to the Northwest of Badin Lake. Not more than a creek there, the fledgling river noisily makes its way down the mountains and across the foothills of North Carolina to where it found an agreeable course through the Uwharrie Mountain Gorge. It was here that nearly 100 years ago ALCOA decided to build a hydropower dam. It was not the first time that someone had tried to build a dam at this point on the Yadkin. Years before, gold miners had tried and failed, but Alcoa was determined to make use of the ideal geography and in 1917 the project was completed.

The result is nothing short of a manmade masterpiece. With over 5300 acres of clear, accessible water year-round, Badin is one of the most beautiful lakes anywhere. With almost one third of its 115 miles of shoreline protected from development by the adjacent Uwharrie National Forest, the warm water lake remains a pristine and preserved ecosystem.

Much deeper than other lakes, Badin's water level is relatively stable year round so it's ideal for boating, swimming ,water skiing, tubing, fishing, and for the best part --- it's never ever crowded.
