The North Carolina Zoo, one of the nation's largest live natural habitat exhibits, is located in Asheboro. The 50,000+ acre Uwharrie National Forest hosts the oldest mountain range in North America, and is a protected outdoor paradise for sportsmen and environmentalists alike. Offering a variety of activities such as camping, bird watching, mountain biking, hiking, hunting, and one of the largest networks of ATV trails on the East Coast, Uwharrie provides a lifetime of outdoor opportunities. Land for the Forest was acquired in 1931 when it was known as the Uwharrie Reservation, and early in his administration, John F. Kennedy designated it is as the Uwharrie National Forest.
